In explaining his fascination with mountain lions, Carney said there exists the remote possibility that the lions in the Shenandoah Park and else where in the Appalachians belong to the Eastern panther subspecies. “If they do, then they’ve made a remarkable recovery, a return from the dead. Documenting evidence that they exist is a start towards protection,” he said. “I don’t think we need to have any species become extinct. There is a place for them all,” he concluded.
