Jerry Jenkins, Woodville and Elsie Gheen, Amissville both sell strawberries already picked. Miriam Harris, Huntly has pick-your-own organically grown strawberries. Ask around in your area for others - there may be more that I am unaware of. If you decide to pick yotir own, always break the stem by pinching between the thumb and forefinger. Never pull on the strawberry for pulling can bruise the fruit, loosen the cap or damage the strawberry plant.
Do not remove caps or wash berries until you are ready to use them. Removal of the cap allows moisture in berries to escape. Refrigerate berries and use within 2 or 3 days.
A 24 quart crate equals 12 to 16 quarts canned or 38 pints frozen. To prepare for freezing, sort, wash with cap on in cold water, drain. Remove caps. Whole Berries with Sugar. In a shallow pan, add V* cup sugar to each I quart of berries and mix thoroughly.
