Scouts See
“New Worlds ”
Girl Scouts from Rappahannock joined troops from 37 counties in the Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council at Harrisonburg last weekend for the annual Region II meeting.
Debby and Wendy Helmer and Kristie Johnson with leaders Pat Helmer and Janet DeRoo represented Cadet Troop 502. Junior Troop 547, led by Martha Kidwell and Cindy Pronovitch, sent 18 scouts to the day-long outing.
The theme of the event was “New Worlds — New Directions.” The Rappahannock Scouts and their leaders toured four exposition units, viewing demonstrations and participating in projects.
At exposition “Outer Spaces,” girls joined in sports activities, learned how to orient a compass, worked with Boy Scouts on construction projects and visited with Smokey Bear and Woodsey Owl. At “SOS Earth,” they participated in environmental games, learned about recycling and viewed a John Denver film on world hunger.
In “Tomorrowland,” the Scouts explored the future of energy, designed and flew paper airplanes and tested out a multitude of career activities. At “It’s a Small World,” the girls saw a miniature United Nations featuring folk dancing, international songs and games and activities to explore diverse cultures and understand world peace.
In addition, the Rappahannock Scouts toured the James Madison University planetarium.
