Decreases
Traffic on Virginia’s major highways in July dropped 4 per cent below the level for the same month last year, the Department of Highways and Transportation said today.
J. P. Mills, Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer, said the report was based on traffic counts at some 280 locations on interstate, arterial, and primary routes.
Travel by all passenger cars was down 6.5 per cent, with that by Virginiaregistered cars dropping 4.7 per cent and that by out-ofstate cars decreasing 14 per cent.
Commercial vehicle traffic was up 2.7 per cent, he said.
Mills said an analysis of data collected at the counting stations indicated a drop of about 5.4 per cent in weekend travel.
He attributed the decline to the shortage and increased cost of gasoline and to efforts by many motorists to consere fuei.
