During the war years. Fr. du Castillon taught French, German and Chinese to seminarians, expecting all the while to return eventually to the Far East. Instead, he was sent to Culpeper.
He served the Virginia community for one year and then was called back to Belgium to teach Chinese for eight more years. He requested a transfer to the United States and a year later, received reappointment to Culpeper.
During a quarter century at Precious Blood, he has seen the Catholic Church here grow from about 90 communicants in an area that included Culpeper. Rappahannock, Madison, Orange, Greene and parts of Louisa counties to 250 families in the Culpeper parish alone. The responsibilities of parish priest have grown along with church membership.
At 76, Fr. du Castillon is ready to slow down. “You cati call it semi-retirement. It’s a semi-retirement that I like—priestly, only priestly, work.”
