Realistic
Refugee
Limits
WASHINGTON —Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson, while noting that “most Americans have a feeling of compassion for the ‘boat people’ and other refugees,” believes that Congress must recognize “the hard fact that we cannot accommodate, without drastic dislocation of our own economy and way of life, everyone who wants to come to the United States.”
The 7th District Representative made the comment in a brief statement referring to bills receiving committee approval in Congress to raise from 17,400 to 50,000 the basic limit on refugees permitted to enter the United States each year. ^ “There also are pending requests of President Carter for an additional $200,000,000 to help refugees before their arrive in the United States, and another $224,000,000 for a special welfare program to help those already here,” he said.
