A 13.9-mile section of Interstate 66 in Warren and Fauquier Counties, between US 340 northwest of Front Royal and VA 55 east of Markham, will be opened to traffic August 30.
Governor John N. Dalton will lead state and local officials for the opening ceremonies at the WarrenFauquier county line at 2 p.m.
The new roadway, which crosses the Blue Ridge Mountains at Manassas Gap, will complete the 29 miles of Interstate 66 between Interstate 81 near Strasburg and US 17 south of Marshall.
Interchanges are located at US 340, Linden and Markham., The new segment will cost about $40 million.
Of the state’s 1,072-mile interstate system, 932 miles will then be completed and 77 miles will be under construction, with 63 miles in planning stages.
A 15-mile section between Marshall and Gainesville is expected to be opened to traffic by the end of the year, completing the 65 rhiles between the Interstate 495 Capital Beltway and Interstate 81. A 10-mile section also is under construction between the Beltway and Washington.
