Born on July 28, 1903. in Belgium to devout Catholic parents, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1927 after studying philosophy in Brussels and theology in Touvain.
He was sent to China in 1929 to study the Chinese language in Peking but circumstances sidetracked him to the town of Linehu where he replaced the parish priest.
Fr. du Castillon said he had expected to remain in China for “the rest of my life, forever" but the outbreak of civil war and invasion bv the Japanese forced his return to Belgium as Europe teetered on the brink of World War II.
