Work on Interstate 66 began in 1958 on three miles west of Marshall. A nine-mile segment between Gainesville and Centreville was opened to traffic in late 1961 and the 13 miles between Centreville and the Capital Beltway were completed in late 1964. The seven-mile section between Interstate 81 and Front Royal was finished in the fall of 1971.
