The safe return of students to the academic world requires the alertness and cooperation of every highway user.
“With the beginning of a new school year, motorists need to be reminded to stop for school buses and reduce their speed when driving near schools and bus stops,” says to John T. Hanna, director, Virginia Department of Transportation Safety.
Last year 203 people were killed on Virginia’s highways during August and September, traditionally the two “back to school” months. The majority of these crashes could have been prevented if drivers and pedestrians had followed traffic rules and kept a sharp look out for others.
