Old Turnpike Abandoned
Askew also brought some good news for Charles Easton of Flint Hill. Last December, Easton applied to the Rappahannock Board of Zoning Appeals for a setback variance for a shed he'd built across from the Willis Chapel Church on Route 522. Instead of approval for his variance request, he received news from the BZA that his house and two feet of the shed were located on state property, old turnpike land instead of land that Easton thought belonged to him.
Askew reported to the supervisors on Thursday that the State Highway Department had abandoned the old turnpike as of August 16. 1979, leaving the property where Easton’s home sits in his ownership.
