The senators, the Governor, the candidates and their wives mingled briefly with their hoards of wellwishers pressing in around them for photographs and handshakes. They then retreated to the stage in front of the house for a barrage of speeches, many of which added a touch of humor to the afternoon.
Arlene Crane spoke in the absence of her husband Rep. Phillip Crane (R-Illinois) and drew resounding laughter from everyone present. She said her husband is an excellent man for the White House, and an excellent father as well.
“He is the father of eight children,” she said, “and any one of them will tell you what a wonderful father he is. But they don’t understand why he wants to be the father of his country. Well, 1 understand why—he’s very well equipped.”
