It isn’t necessary to train a Walker hound to hunt foxes. Hunting comes naturally, at least to Clifton’s hounds. ‘They learn on their own. You just teach them enough so you can handle them,’’ he said.
They’re gentle dogs with not a single vicious bone in their bodies. Farmyard cats, cattle with newborn calves in the field don’t even rate a second glance from a pack of Walkers. “They’re the most harmless dog that ever was,” maintained Clifton. They’re so gentle that the Clarks, with 20 to 30 resident Walker hounds, keep a loud and extremely irritable beagle to ward unwanted strangers off the farm since his hounds are worthless as guard or watch animals. “Walkers don't think about anything in this world but hunting,” Clifton affirmed.
Several veteran troopers, old field trial stars from the past, lounge around the Clark’s front porch and yard.
