“growing number of people in Rappahannock and the rest of the country. The Northern Piedmont Beekeepers Association, which is affiliated with the Virginia State Beekeepers Association, knows of at least 25 beekeepers in Rappahannock, though there may be as many as double that number, estimates Amberson. The Association itself was formed about three years ago, and its main aim is to educate and provide information to beekeepers and those interested in bees. Says Amberson, “We’ve drawn beekeepers from five counties now . . . We now have quite a big exchange of ideas.”
Bees are not native to North America, but came from Europe. There are a number of races of bees, and the strain most frequently found in the U.S. is the Italian bee. “The Italian bee is the best bee to have in this area - they’re not excited too fast, they make a lot of honey, and they don’t gum up the hives with propolis,” explains Amberson. (Propolis is a resinous material collected by bees from the buds of trees and used by the bees as a cement - also called bee glue.)
The hive is a highly complex organism, and is composed of three different bees: the drone, the Queen and the worker. Each of these has a specific role to play in the life of the hive, and each bee not only knows instinctively what it is supposed to do, it also never deviates from its assigned duties.
