rated issue in this area was the “lack of knowledge (youth have) about drugs and alcohol."
In the section titled legallaw enforcement, the lack of basic knowledge about laws and the justice system was the most highly rated problem.
In the area of family, the "lack of interested adults (for youth) to discuss problems with" was rated highest with “(Youth) Receive little emotional support or encouragement from family" and “Parents provide insufficient supervision and control” tied for second.
All problems in the area of recreation were rated as affecting some, but less than a Vi of youth, with “Constructive recreation-leisure activities outside school are not available” rated as the most serious youth recreation need.
The single question asked in the temporary shelter section was rated fairly low, but the comments indicated some professionals felt there is need for some kind of emergency shelter care program or facility. Among these was the comment. “Although the need is scarce, the need is very pressing when it does occur.”
Employment was ranked the most serious problem area, with Family, Education, Drugs and Alcohol and Recreation following closely. The barrier to services indicated as most troublesome was “limited agency budget” with “red tape” and “child not meeting requirements” a close second and third.
Discussion and comments on the survey results are invited and encouraged. By exchanging ideas and examining these survey results, a clearer understanding of youth needs and services can be gained. This is the important step towards preparing a workable plan to provide a more positive environment for the youth of Rappahannock County.
