The Andrea Doria wasn’t a worn out freighter. She was the queen of the Italian passenger liners, held by many to be the most beautiful ship in the world. With her original canvases, murals, frescoes, tapestries, sculptures and mirrors, she echoed the glories of the Renaissance.
Like the Titantic, she ranked as one of those great ships that couldn't go down. But go down she did, sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic.

Hoffer relates the string of minor miscalculations, actions and inactions that led to the Andrea Doria’s collision wi^h the Stockholm. Ships veered ever so slightly off course and tried to pass each other on the wrong side. Veteran seamen slept in their bunks while rookies manned tb^ridge and a captain with a docking deadline pushed his ship just a few knots faster than safety called for in the thick fog.
