women are welcome as are youngsters. The Amissville squad accepts teenagers aged 15 through 18 as junior members. The young men and women are allowed to ride on calls at 16 years of age but first must complete the same training required of adults.
“It would help to have some retired persons volunteer,” Atkins said. “Most of our current members work and are not available for daytime calls.” If a fire breaks out, Atkins said. Amissville must contact another volunteer fire department. “It adds to the time it takes us to respond to an emergency,” he said.
Atkins noted that fire insurance rates on homes in the Amissville area will go up should the fire and rescue squad be forced to disband for lack of members.
