RCHS didn’t give up easily. The Panthers fought their way back to within three, scoring 20 points in the third period to bring the tally to 46-43. But they couldn’t sustain the effort in the final six minutes and scored only 12 to 17 from the Elkton JV.

County Game Warden Jim Bankston reported this week that the final deer kill tally for Rappahannock in the 1979-80 hunting season was 806. “I'm sure more deer than that were killed but that was the total checked.” he added.
The legal deer harvest breaks down to four animals killed for every square mile of forest area in the county, according to the game warden. This year’s harvest amounted to slightly less than the record number shot last year.
In addition to the deer, two bears and 70 turkeys were checked. Last year, seven bears and 15 turkeys were taken.
Bankston said he’d written approximately 40 citations for violations of hunting laws. "Road hunting wasn’t the tremendous problem that it’s been in past years, primarily because of gas price increases," he said. "But the same individuals, the same hardcore group who have ridden the roads year in and year out, were out there again this year. Some of them are regulars you can almost set your watch by,” Bankston added. “They were at Thomas Eastham’s (Ben Venue Farm), at the Shade and down in Jenkins Hollow every morning.”
According to Bankston,| hunting pressure was lower this year. “But deer were soj numerous that the kill was up on a par with last year’s record kill,” he said. Counting animals killed illegally, he estimated that the harvest actually was “way over 900.”
