Tax Credits
For Wood
Stoves?
Seventh District Congressman J. Kennetn Robinson is one of the signers of a joint letter sent to all Senators and Representatives charged with working out the final details of the energy tax bill. Robinson joined in urging that provision be made in the bill for. tax credits for woodburning stove equipment.
“The Senate version of the oil windfall profits tax legislation would allow an energy tax credit to be provided for citizens who invest in wood-burning stove equipment. The House version would not,” Robinson explained.
“We are interested in persuading the House-Senate conference to accept the Senate provision because the increased use of wood would be a tremendous energysaver. It’s estimated we could save close to 100 million barrels of oil annually by increasing residential woodburning in areas where practical, and a Department of Energy study has confirmed that the nation’s wood supply would allow for a substantial increase in its use. Furthermore, wood stoves present a more realistic option for lowincome families than complex and expensive energy conservation equipment,” Robinson said. Persons who have invested in wood-burning stoves over the past year are urged to save their receipts for the equipment until it is determined whether tax credits will be allowed.
