Swedish sailors in the Stockholm fought back anger as they stretched out hands to lifeboats from the Andrea Doria and, instead of passengers, found themselves helping stewards and waiters, some wearing officer’s epaulets. “Not until the third boat, also filled mainly with crew, were ten children lifted to safety,” Hoffer relates.
Bad luck conspired with misfortune to bring about the collision. The roll of the dice changed, though, during the great sea rescue. The Andrea Doria stayed afloat longer then anyone thought possible, allowing time for escape. Other ships in the area took the distress calls seriously and arrived before the great ship went down. Th#1 fog lifted while brave men and women, passengers and crew, worked to save themselves and others.
Hoffer’s story has a happy ending. Although property and lives were lost, it could have been so much worse. When the final count was taken, 30 times as many people are rescued as perished.
