in the rescue squad, an individual must have a minimum of 54 hours of first aid training. An additional 72 hours of training—10 of which must be in a hospital—are required for emergency medical technician. EMT training is recommended but not mandated, “at least not yet,” Atkins said. EMTs must take a refresher course every three years while regular squad members must have 30 hours of first aid classes every three years. Fire fighters must take a basic 30 hour course.
“By the time we get all this ,done, it doesn’t leave us much time to do anything else,” Atkins said.
To do an efficient and effective job, the fire and rescue squad needs 20 to 25 ACTIVE members, according to Atkins.
