No Inspiration
Hoffer was 13 years old when the Stockholm plowed into the Andrea Doria. He remembers the tragedy but just barely. It wasn’t an event that burned itself into his memory and inspired him to write the tale 24 years later.
“I’d like to give you some grand story of a quest but there wasn’t one.” Hoffer admitts. Instead. “Saved!” was an assignment handed down from the buyer.
An editor of Simon and Schuster read "Midnight Express”. Hoffer’s previous book written with Billie Hayes. The story of a young American imprisoned on drug charges in a Turkish jail, "Midnight Express" was made into a movie and nominated for six Academy Awards.
