When it comes to tanning and sunburning, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Just rubbing mineral or baby oil on your skin is no protection against burning, warns Glen H. Hetzel, Extension safety specialist at Virginia Tech.

Lubricants like cream or cocoa butter without sunscreens just keep the skin from drying as you bake it. And if a persons is prone to burn instead of bake, it could cause pain.
