she s been aiming the sixyear-old, three-quarter Arabian gelding toward the Old Dominion ride ever since her mare and regular mount D'Arcy pulled up lame in last year’s contest.
“We’ve probably averaged 10 hours and 85 miles per week— about one and a half hours per day with a long ride on the weekends,” Alexander said.
Startez’s training didn't include any elaborate diet to help bring him to top condition. Compared to highly bred thoroughbreds who gulp gallons of feed a day, Alexander’s gelding gets by on peanuts. “His feeding schedule is laughable. He gets maybe a half quart of grain a day and pasture but he’s bred for it. He’s tough, an easy keeper,” she said.
