Certification forms are now being distributed to Virginia corn producers for a fall referendum to determine if a Corn Commission will be created in the state.
Under the proposed plan approved by the General Assembly and the Governor early this year, the corn growers would assess themselves one-quarter cent per bushel on all com sold, except sugar com, popcorn and ornamental com. They money would be used for market development, education, publicity, research and promotion: Time other commodity groups have similar commissions already established in the state.
A Virginia Cora Growers Association was formed in 1976 and this group asked the General Assembly for legislation to conduct the referendum. Cora is one of Virginia’s leading crops and in 1979 yielded a record production estimated at 51 million bushels.
