In remarks before the Southeast District Farm Credit Forum in Courtland, Commissioner S. Mason Carbaugh of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Comsumer Services recently expressed grave concern over the weakening economic situation of most Virginia farmers.
According to Carbaugh, if current conditions continue over the next few months, the state’s farmers may witness a 40 to 50 percent drop in net farm income from last year’s level. He also cautioned that further deterioration of the farm economy will hasten the recessionary conditions throughout Virginia’s total economy.
