Turn out on Tuesday was suprisingly high for a single issue referendum. Comparing ballots in each magisterial district with the votes cast last year in the contest for commonwealth’s attorney, the most hotly contested race on the ballot in November's general election, the turn-out was 51 per cent for Stonewall-Hawthome, 52, per cent for Hampton, 61 per cent for Wakefield, 70 per cent for Piedmont and 56 per cent for Jackson.
The lopsided margin in the referendum can be viewed as backlash against recent appointments by the electoral trustees which have sparked controversy throughout Ahe ’WtntTy. ~ -- .*
