By unanimous vote, the BZA granted Potomac Edison a variance to store equipment and materials for rebuilding the electric line from Page County to Sperryville. Spokesman for the company assured the BZA that no building will be constructed, that materials only—heavy hardware, poles, insulators—will be assembled at the storage site.
In a second unanimous vote, the BZA issued a special use permit to Rappahannock Electric Cooperative to put in an underground tie line near Rock Mills. According to REC representative William Carson, the 1,700 volt underground tie line will eliminate the need for four to five miles of above ground line, thereby improving service reliability and conserving energy.
‘‘In other words, you’ll shorten the line by going underground,” Gardiner said.
"The main thrust is to improve reliability,” Carson replied, noting that with the shortened, underground line, there would be less chance of storm damage interrupting electrical service.
Most of the underground line will be laid along existing utility company right-of-way, Carson said. The line will be buried at a depth of three feet—lower than the average fence post or shrubbery hole—with a yellow marker ribbon placed about a foot above the line itself, according to the REC representative.
