Fair-skinned individuals should begin with IS minutes of exposure and over three more days, work up to 30 minutes. Those of medium skin may start with 20 minutes, increasing five minutes each day to a 35minute exposure over a fourday period. Other time exposures are less conservative but 30-40 minutes is usually the limit for the first day.
“Examine the label of your oil, lotion, cream, or gel,” Hetzel recommended. “Effective sunscreens contain an ingredient called paraamino-benzoic acid (PABA). They permit tanning while offering minimum protection against burning."
Sun blocks minimize tanning while increasing the protection to burning. Physical barriers provide maximum burn protection.
