The citizens of Rappahannock County have rejected, by an overwhelming majority, the divisive tactics by which certain members of the School Board have frustrated their desires to support their school system. It seems to me that the students, teachers and school administration have been welcomed, by the success of the referendum, back into the county. I hope they will feel so welcomed.

Now what about those members of the school board who have so misinterpreted their functions? It appears to me that their options are clear. They can:

1. Resign, out of common decency, and let the schools get on with their business; or

2. Refuse to resign, and (a) continue their divisive tactics, to the detriment of the whole community until their terms run out, or other legal measures are found to terminate their tenure, or (b) continue their term in office, but honestly study the ways available to them to help the citizens of the county achieve and maintain a school system which is as effective as possible.

I hope each member of the School Board will consider seriously his relationship to the future of Rappahannock's Schools. A. STANLEY THOMPSON

Another feature of the day will be the bicycle decorating contest under the auspices of Eileen Day, Realtor and the Business Council. Youngsters may let their imagination soar as they decorate their bicycles for competition in the following classes: most artistic, most patriotic, funniest and most original.

Bicycle judging will be in three groups: ages 7 to 10 years; 11 to 14 and 15 to 18. A parade will precede the judging.

Climaxing the day’s activities will be the annual fireworks display at Avon Hall, through the generosity of Mr. and Mrs. William Carrigan. A patriotic program will precede the fireworks.
