At first, the town didn’t take its government in petticoats very seriously. “The men thought it was hilarious,” Dorothy remembered. “But after they realized our determination, they were proud!”
Dorothy’s family was behind her from the outset. She described her husband June’s reaction as “excited and very supportive” while her two sons, Ronnie and Stewart, thought it was "a real big thing—mother getting into politics.”
Washington’s electorate must have approved of the political mothers because the town kept “ladies only” in office until the 1970’s. As a result, according to Dorothy, Rappahannock's county seat earned its humorous nickname, “she-town.”
