Hiking in Dolly Sods
We shouldered our packs and walked west on the "Blackbird Knob” trail. A* first, the trail was very laccommodating—we were walking on wooden ties! But the quality of the trail soon degraded. It became uneven and wet, following drainages. At times, we walked through flowing water several inches deep. The trail was flanked by impenetrable shrubby growth, so we had no choice but to follow it.
The weather was stormy, the bushes were wet, and to cross Red Creek, we had to wade through swift water, knee-deep. Our pack-in, though, was only a couple of miles, and the scenery and sensations were marvelous. We walked through polesized red pines, forced our
