The short ascent up Blackbird Knob provided rewarding vistas over the sods. We passed through a shadowy, ferny beech copse, then crossed a wide meadow.
We set up camp on a knoll, surrounded by scraggly quaking aspen, short American beech, and a wonderful overlook of the Red Creek watershed. Wet and tired, and unsheltered from the gusty wind, we were somewhat chilled after supper, and sought the warmth of our sleeping bags while it was still twilight. A tent was set up in case of rain, but we slept in the open.
Sleep that night was sporadic. We were awake at sunup, but lulled by the soft, dreamy songs of hermit thrushes drifting up from the dark copses. The wind was
