Contrary to a recent trend that indicated holiday weekends in Virginia were becoming no more dangerous to motorists in terms of fatalities than any other weekend, 23 persons lost their lives in highway crashes over the Labor Day weekend according to preliminary State Police statistics.
The 23 deaths represent the highest number of weekend deaths since the Thanksgiving Day holiday of 1978.
Historically, more motorists have been killed on Labor Day weekends than any other major holiday weekend which includes Memorial Day, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. During the 1970s, 183 persons were killed over the three-day Labor Day weekend compared to 173 killed over the four-day Thanksgiving Day weekend.
In an attempt to reduce major holiday highway crashes and the resulting injuries and deaths, the Virginia State Police have been participating for the past several years in a special selective enforcement program known nationally as Operation C.A;R.E. during the Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day weekends.
