The owner or custodian of any dog which has bitten a person or any person having knowledge of any dog which has bitten a person shall immediately notify the County dog warden. The dog warden or any person charged with the enforcement of this chapter shall immediately examine such dog, and shall either order such dog chained or confined in a strong enclosure on the owner’s or custodian's premises, isolated from all other animals, for not less than ten days, or impounded at the cost of the owner, or, if the custodian of such dog so desires, it may be placed in the custody of a licensed veterinarian for a like period. If such dog is placed in the custody of a licensed veterinarian, the cost of any such impoundment shall be borne by the owner or custodian of such dog. If after being chained, confined or impounded for a period of at least ten days it appears that such dog is not rabid, it may be released upon authorization of a duly licensed veterinarian, or upon the authorization of any person charged with the enforcement of this chapter.
If any dog bites any person or any dog annoys any person by running after them in the streets in a vicious manner, the judge of the general district court upon proof of the fact, may order such dog to be killed by the county dog warden. It shall be unlawful for the owner of the dog to conceal it or otherwise hinder the county dog warden in executing the order of the judge.
A violation of this ordinance shall constitute a class four (4) misdemeanor as defined by the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended.
