There is scenery, and there are potential vacation homesites, and proposed skyline highway routes. There is timber—planted red pines and red spruce, and native hardwoods—some of which is marketable. There is watershed, and altitude, and a potential site for a hydroelectric reservoir.
And there is organic matter—black, buried, compressed, ages old. This storehouse of energy is mineable and could, for a time, help to feed a coal-fired Virginia Electric and Power Company plant, just ten miles away.
These are reasons for development and exploitation. There are also reasons for protection and nurture. Practical ones are watershed protection, economic value of recreation, important scientific study, etc. The greatest reasons, though. cannot be enumerated.
