snn strong ana incessant. Breakfast was coffee and cornmeal pancakes, the batter containing a generous handful of wild blueberries.

This was Saturday, the day of our main hike. Our destination was the Cabin Mountain ridge, via a meander along a Red Creek tributary. The terrain was open and not too steep, but walking was tiring. The wet soil of the sods sucked at our feet. Drier areas were interspersed, but there were rocks and unyielding woody growth to trip us up.

Too, progress was slowed by frequent stops to study an unfamiliar plant, identify a raptor or sparrow, or watch a far-off deer herd. This area was truly a paradise for whitetail deer. It seemed we
