Sleep was again intermittent the second night. The wind will still strong, swishing across the knoll. Once, 1 awoke to a blazing quarter-moon, and lay awake watching the clouds zip past the stars and planets. Much later, there was a flash thunderstorm. Awakended by a few drops, I saw a wondrous cloudburst sweeping across the valley below. The three of us scrambled and crowded into our “emergency” tent, thankful for temporary shelter.
Morning, we slept past sunup. After a short ramble through beech copses (for thrush identification) and breakfast, we packed and headed east, walking towards the sun, with dark protean rainclouds behind us.
Soon we reached Red Creek. The water was darkly tea-colored (and incidentally quite palatable and safe); but we couldn’t see the bottom. There, just upstream, was a beaver dam. We gingerly picked our way across, and looked back towards our campsite. We saw the rain sweeping towards us, and a rainbow. A thick, arching shrub provided partial shelter, from which we
