Marshland Plants
“Tread lightly,” 1 thought to myself when walking on the rocky, mossy marshes. Tom, a sharp-eyed botanist, pointed out numerous delicate, beautiful marshland plants. There were sundews—tiny, red, glistening, carniverous. There were lilies, orchids, cranberries, and narrow-leaved cattails. In one of these bogs, there were two smooth greensnakes, which Tom spotted and Ali photographed.
Cabin Mountain is a long ridge, the western boundary of Dolly Sods. We picked enough blueberries to supplement our lunch sandwiches, and ate while sitting on a sandstone boulder, looking west across the Canaan Valley.
High and to the west, in the haze, we spotted a great blue heron, soaring in tight circles like a hawk, legs dangling behind. Ravens frequently greeted us with their low, gutteral squawks.
