installing the siren in the belfry of the new town hall. With its six by six solid wood posts, the belfry should be structurally capable of supporting the siren, he said.
Having the siren inside will protect the alarm system. Miller noted, adding that the belfry is right next to a power source. He also pointed out that the proposed location will avoid the need for erecting an unsightly steel tower.
Questioned regarding possible damage to the building's plaster walls from the siren’s vibrations, the mayor maintained that the belfry would be far enough away from the siren for the vibrations to dissipate before reaching the plaster.
Brad Fisher added that the siren could also be placed on an antivibration mount.
“I think it sounds just ideal," interjected councilwoman Dorothy Hawkins.
Miller continued that the only construction required will be addition of two cross beams to hold the siren and its anti-vibration mounting.
Taylor Updike pointed out that putting the siren in the belfry will save the town the cost of the steel tower and its concrete supports.
“Even if they both cost the same, the belfry would be a better location,” Miller said.
The council voted unanimously to authorize the mayor to continue arrangements for relocating the siren in the belfry and requested Fisher, also a member of WVFD, to make sure the new site for the siren meets with approval from the firemen.
