Coats Too High
The leash law proposed two months ago in response to problems with roaming dogs in town has beer dropped. In light oi Virginia’s costly new mandates on dog pounds, the council agreed that administration of the proposed ordinance would be too expensive.
Only half in jest. Miller estimated that it would cost approximately $1,000 per dog for the town to enforce a leash law and guessed that the total bill would exceed the amount spent to maintain Washington’s water system.
In regard to the water system, treasurer Brad Fisher passed out copies of the new rate schedule which will go into effect January 1, 1981. The increases, which still leave town residents with probably the cheapest public water in the state, will generate Approximately $1,200 more per year in revenue.
The extra funds are needed to help finance improvements and added to town revenue will bring the amount available to upgrade the water system to $8,500. The council set next spring for the start of improvements. ’’We’ll make the changes when the water is pretty plentiful because there’s going to be some wastage," Miller said. Plans call for replacement of lines, addition of modern chlorinators and installation of meters to measure the amount of water leaving the system. Under the new rates, charges for the first 3,000 galllons will go from $3 to $4.45, an increase of 48 per cent. For consumption of 3,000 to 10,000 gallons over that base, charges will increase from 10 cents to 12 cents per 100 gallons and for over 10,000 gallons, from 20 cents to 24 cents per 100
