The third important -question to ask, Vodak said, is the wood “green” or "dry.” Dry wood is preferred over green wood because it contributes less to creosote build-up and yields 12 to 20 percent more heat than green wood. It is recommended that firewood be allowed to dry for six to 12 months before burning, regardless of the species.
While it may not always be possible, he said, it will make a difference in the heating value of the wood.
Again, prices often reflect whether the wood is green or dry. A buyer usually can expect to pay a little more for dry wood, although, as the demand for firewood increases, prices for green and dry wood can be the same, Vodak said.
