In 1982 several equine related events of significance took place for the benefit not only of the horse population in Virginia, but the human as well.
One of the first of these was the construction of the long awaited Marion duPont Scott Equine Veterinary Medical Center at Morven Park in Leesburg. Although ground was broken for the center in the fall of 1981, actual construction did not begin until the spring of 1982, with final completion of the first phase on schedule for mid-198?.
A construction crew of between 60 and 70 carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, electricians, masons and laborers is employed full time in building the facility which will, when completed, provide patient housing for 30 horses, as well as clinical capabilities for examinations and special procedures, soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, intensive care, radiology, physical therapy, and pathology, as well as a research center.
When the initial phase is completed and additional funding is raised, expansion plans call for construction to include a 100 stall capacity. At time of final completion the facility will enclose approximately 103.000 square feet and will have a resident faculty and staff of approximately 30.
