Chickahominy rivers. Although wintering eagles are located along most of the major river systems in Virginia, there are several areas open to the public where eagles regularly occur and where the birds might be observed bv interested persons.
The Commission’s Hog Island Waterfowl Refuge in Surry County presently harbors two adult eagles as well as an immature bird. These birds regularly are seen on the back end of the Refuge which is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day.
The Commission’s Lands End Refuge on the upper Rappahannock River below Port Royal has a number of wintering eagles which normally use the river shoreline of the Refuge. Two Federal refuges, Presquile on the James River at Hopewell and Mason's Neck on the upper Potomac River both have numbers of wintering eagles. Access to these Federal refuges may be obtained by prior arrangements with the appropriate refuge manager.
Since these state and Federal refuge areas are managed largely for waterfowl and other species, a visitor may expect to see a diversity of bird life as well as bald eagles.
