Gregory w charged with first decree murder in proceedings that were moved from Loudoun County due to extensive pretrial publicity. He pleaded not guilty by reason of irrisistible impulse. The jury found him Gregory guilty of manslaguther and fixed his punishment at a $1,000 fine.
Crime and courthouse drama continued to dominate the headlines at the close of 1982 with the empanelment in November of the county’s first special grand jury to investigate the shooting death of Ranee Spellman, manager of Points of View Farm in Flint Hill. Spellman was shot while operating a bulldozer on a disputed right of way which serves property owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roger Kidwell and three lots owned by Spellman's employer. After taking testimony from Roger and Diane Kidwell; Patricia Saltsonstall, owner of Points of View Farm; law enforcement officers and others, the special grand jury handed over its sealed report to commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner. Baumgardner requested the court to call back the regular grand jury into session, announcing that if an indictment was returned, he planned to prosecute Diane Kidwell for second degree murder. The grand jury returned a murder indictment and a preliminary hearing for the case has been set for early January.
