There is great concern over the pollution of the Thornton River in Sperryville caused by the direct piping of raw sewage into the river by some residents as well as over the recent failure of the refuse company providing dumpster units for county dump sites to honor its contract. According to complaints, the dumpsters were overloaded, unsightly and unsanitary.
Radioman Second Class Ernest F. Clater, U.S.N., was awarded a Meritorious Mast for his work as a Teletypewriter Operator in the Defense Communications Agency Operations Center in Arlington, Va. Capt. John Sparger, U.S.N., Center Chief, presented the award. Clater is the son of Mrs. James Clater of Sperryville.
