It’s time again for the annual Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count.
The objective is to try to identify as many different species in the local area. The census will be held in the vicinity of Double Tollgate on Dec, 18, at Luray, Dec. 19, and Calmes Neck, Jan. 2.
The Double Tollgate count has compiled the highest number of different species for the Appalacian region in the past. Apart from the count’s attraction as a social, sporting, and competitive event, the census gives a clearer understanding of the early winter distribution of the different species.
Additional birdwatchers are needed to participate in this annual event. Anyone interested in participating should contact Prof. Rob Simpson at 869-2051 or Lord Fairfax Community College at 869-1120.
