Would Trible carry on the Byrd tradition? “His statements during the campaign indicated that he had a very significant rapport with my basic philosophy,” Byrd said.
Although the senator never formally endorsed Trible, he made it clear, in his own subtle ways, that he preferred Trible, a Republican, to Democrat Richard J. Davis.
Would the senator be encouraging his sons to enter politics? “I think my older son (Harry F. Byrd III) is not interested” in running for political office, Byrd said.
He added that his son, Thomas, has been involved in political campaigns and is “a very able, hard working, dedicated guy and the type of person who should be encouraged to go into public life. But having said that, as a father, I would not encourage it. It's a decision that he has to make.”
