The Economy

Farm income dropped in 1982 while production costs continued their sharp climb, catching farmers in a pricecost squeeze that is resulting in record numbers of acres being taken out of agricultural production across the country. ‘‘For Sale" signs have popped up in a few Rappahannock pastures, a signal of the hard times for local farmers.

For most of the year, Rappahannock led the planning district in unemployment rates, far ahead of the bigger and more heavily populated counties of Orange, Culpeper. Fauquier and Madison. The jobless rate here topped 11.4 percent in September before dropping back to 8.4 percent in October, the latest month for which the Virginia Employment Commission has released statistics.
