Byrd said he could not comment on statements, made by Sen. Robert Dole (R-Kan.), that the President has not consulted enough with the Senate Republican leadership. Byrd said he himself has found Reagan to be “accessible.”
“I've talked with him frequently,” Byrd said. "He telephones me w,ith some frequency. So I’ve had no problem in that regard. As a matter of fact, he’s probably as accessible, if not more so, than most presidents."
Byrd’s biggest disappointment, however, remains the failure of Congress to significantly reduce the growth of federal spending. Spending has not been decreased under Reagan, Byrd said. Rather, the rate of increase has been cut—but not by much, he contends.
